『Excuse Me I Am Expanding』は、2022年から2023年にかけて日本、アイルランド、スコットランドで撮影された舞踏映画である。この作品は、アイデンティティーの拡大、自分のルーツや家族の系譜を理解しようとすること、そして未来に向かって疾走し、他の文化、他の種、地球のリズム、生と死とつながろうと努力することを探求している。爆発することなく、時間を行ったり来たりしている。
この映画の音の世界は、東京の増上寺と江ノ島で録音されたものに、アイルランドの民謡と電子音響デザインがミックスされている。日本でのパフォーマンスは、東京・神田の「楽道庵」でのパフォーマンスと街の賑やかな通り、郊外の川、山、墓地、京都周辺の田舎で撮影された。これらに、アイルランドの廃坑、泥炭地、月面の風景、そして幽霊が出ると噂されるスコットランドの廃墟となった城の映像がミックスされている。
『Excuse Me I Am Expanding』は、スコットランドとアイルランドのルーツを夢見ながら、都会で暮らす圧倒的な感覚の中で、拡大した自己の感覚を踊ろうとするポール・マイケル・ヘンリーのドキュメントである。多くの場所に同時に滞在しながら、どのように踊り、生き抜くのか。
Excuse Me I Am Expanding is a Butoh dance film shot between Japan, Ireland and Scotland between 2022-2023. It’s an exploration of expanding identity, and of trying to understand one’s personal roots and family genealogy while hurtling into the future and striving to connect with other cultures, other species and the rhythms of the Earth, of life and of death. Trying to go backwards and forwards in time without exploding.
The sound world of the film comes from recordings taken at Zojo temple in Tokyo and Enoshima Island, mixed with Irish folk songs and electronic sound design. The performances in Japan were filmed between Rakudoan performance space and the busy streets around it in Tokyo, in rivers, mountains and cemeteries outside the city, and the countryside around Kyoto. These are mixed with footage from abandoned mines, peat bogs and lunar landscapes in Ireland, and a ruined castle in Scotland that is rumoured to be haunted.
Excuse Me I Am Expanding is a document of Paul Michael Henry trying to dance their expanded sense of self amidst the overwhelming sensations of living in urban Japan, while dreaming backwards to their roots in Scotland and Ireland. How to dance and survive being in too many places at the same time?

最近のプロジェクトには、Edinburgh Fringe 2022での『SHRIMP DANCE』（抗うつ剤、環境危機、後期資本主義との関連性を探るマルチメディア・ダンス作品）、『Laughter at Being Crushed』でのアメリカツアー、フランスと日本での舞踏ダンサーとしてのツアー、Centre for Contemporary Arts （CCA） Glasgow での新作『Mammy』の初演などがある。
スコットランドと世界的に男性の自殺率が高いことを探求する新作映画『SMITE ME NOW』を制作。
現在、スコットランド王立音楽院（Royal Conservatoire of Scotland）で博士号取得に向けて研究中で、「個人-消費者」から「相互依存-生態系」へと自己の感覚をシフトさせるテクニックを研究している。
マイケルのテーマは、政治的、社会的、精神的なもので、消費主義社会における愛、身体の軽視、環境破壊、魂の萎縮を扱っている。
また、UNFIXフェスティバルのアーティスティック・ディレクターであり、クリエイターでもある。UNFIXは、エコロジーにコミットしたパフォーマンス、ダンス、音楽、映画、ディスカッションをプラットフォームとしていて、進化的かつ実験的なフェスティバルである。 UUNFIXは、気候変動、大規模な不平等、狂気の消費主義の時代における我々の苦境に、人類が目覚める一助となることを意図している。グラスゴーを拠点に、同地、ニューヨーク、東京で進行中。www.unfixfestival.com
Paul Michael Henry is an Irish Scottish performance artist, dancer and musician. His work is informed by Butoh dance, punk rock and ritual, and is performed all over the world.
Recent projects include SHRIMP DANCE at the Edinburgh Fringe 2022 (a multimedia dance work exploring the links between anti-depressants, ecological crisis and late capitalism), a tour of the United States with Laughter at Being Crushed, touring as a Butoh dancer in France and Japan, the premiere of
new performance Mammy at CCA Glasgow, and a new film exploring high rates of male suicide in Scotland and globally called SMITE ME NOW.
He is currently working towards a PhD at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, researching techniques for shifting our sense of self from Individual-Consumer to Interdependent-Ecological.
Michael’s themes are political, social & spiritual, dealing with love, neglect of the body, destruction of the environment and atrophy of the soul in consumerist society.
He is also Artistic Director and creator of UNFIX, an evolving and experimental festival platforming ecologically committed performance, dance, music, film and discussion.
UNFIX is intended as a contribution to the waking up of the human species to our predicament in an age of climate change, massive inequality and crazy consumerism. It is based in Glasgow and is ongoing there and in New York City and Tokyo. www.unfixfestival.com
